I was on a train from Beijing, China to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Our cabin-mates had a cell phone with satelite service. They were Europeans out on holiday to Mongolia. She came running to me because she knew that I was American. "You know the World Trade Center?" she asked. "Yes." I said. "Well, it's GONE!" she said. She told me the details as her friend told them to her on the phone. I thought she must be getting it wrong. It couldn't be true! When I got to Mongolia I found an internet cafe, checked the news and emailed home. Then I spent all the time I could spare watching CNN at the electronic store.
My mother and sister had just flown out of Boston, just before the hijackers did.
We will never forget!

ReplyDeleteI can't believe it's been 8 years!! I remember exactly where I was. What I was doing. I don't think that will ever leave me.
