See You in September!

This is Aunt Julie, guest writing for Veggie Mom today, so she can have a day off. I wanted to take this moment, and this medium, to brag about her girls, College Girl and the Wild One, a little.

I have known them since they were tiny, (naturally, since I am "Aunt Julie" and all) and just wanted to say what lovely young women they have matured into! Uncle Lynn and I could not be more proud. Their cousins are too, thought they won't admit it!

College Girl recently graduated with honors from Lawrence University, with a degree in History. In the fall, she will be off to the University of Wisconsin Madison to study law.

The Wild One is studying photography at Lawrence, and just completed her freshman year.

UW-Madison is Moker, their Dad's, alma mater. And also that of Uncle Lynn, who got his law degree from there, when tuition was about $1.50.

As part of Candid Carrie's Friday Foto Finish Fiesta, thought I'd share some photos, taken by Veggie Mom's sister, Miss Jo. I also want to wish the girls a safe and happy summer!

Weekly Winners: Martha Stewart, Eat Your Heart Out!

Shot by Aunt Julie with a Canon Rebel XTi
College Girl is moving into a new apartment soon. Of course, CG's newest adventure gives Aunt Julie just the excuse she needs~to go garage-sale-ing. Auntie J. called me at work with a Furniture Alert.

"I found the cutest retro kitchen tables and chairs!"

"Don't you already have a table and chairs?"

"No, silly. For College Girl!"

I hadn't known we were in the market. But take a close look at this set, circa 1955. I went to Retro Planet.com, and couldn't find a chrome and vinyl dinette set like this for less than $1,497...

...and guess how much Julie Eliz paid, for the table and four chairs?

Would you believe $45? For the set? Of course, the lovely yard and garden aren't included in that price. I just love the detailing on the chairs, as well as the funky, jointed legs. Aunt Julie apologized because the vinyl is buff and not one of those whacked-out Happy Days colors...

...but College Girl, especially, loves this set. And how cool is it that the table comes with an extension, too!

Of course, I guess this means that my eldest has to learn to cook now. Or else she'll end up incorporating this lovely set into her unique "filing" system.

I call it the "drop it anywhere and run" approach to staying organized. She used it quite successfully at her old place. It features papers, books, used fast food containers and every other kind of flotsam and jetsam, which land where one flings them~on top of or within about 10 feet of the kitchen table.

Whatever works. But I'm provisioning CG with a recipe box stuffed with a slew of recipes from Aunt Julie's Kitchen. Then maybe she'll have me over for dinner some evening, and I'll be able to enjoy my food on this lovely dinette set.

A mother can only dream, right?

BTW, Weekly Winners is sponsored by Lotus over at Sarcastic Mom. Please drop by and share some Sunday love!

We Need to Clean Up Our Act

Our dishwasher has been out of commission for a week. So, we've gone back to the good old-fashioned method~washing dishes by hand.

I hadn't really realized how dependent we were on the modern miracle of KitchenAid until the dishes started stacking up in the sink. And getting on my last nerve.

Yes, the family knows how to do dishes by hand. We frequently employ the sink, the faucet and the good ol' drying rack after special occasions, when we have too many dishes to load. But with four people coming and going at all hours of the day and night this summer, and no one specifically assigned to "dish duty," things have become a tad chaotic.

I'll wash the breakfast dishes. Then College Girl might come through with a coffee cup and put it in the sink. And when the stack becomes less-than-manageable, The Wild One and Moker start leaving dishes all over the place.

Yes, I'm going a littel nuts here. And I'm really afraid that our friends the ants might come back for a visit before we get the dishwasher problem resolved.

I'm the first to admit that my kids are lazy. But when I drafted the girls to help with the dishes last night after dinner, it was as if I were speaking Russian to them, and asking them to paint a stack of nesting dolls.

My Mom always had the kids form an assembly line: one for washing, one for drying, one for putting away. And after a little bit of "who's on first, what's on second?" last night, we were humming like the well-oiled machine I remember from my childhood.

Until Moker came through and put his ice cream bowl in the sink. Without even rinsing it out.

Men.

Fx4: We're in the Army, Now!

OK, I confess. I don't have the most consistent parenting style. That's why I was surprised to take this quiz and find out that I apparently fall under the category of "Sgt. Strict."

Of course, it never helped that I had two little girls with such different personalities. College Girl was compliant; I could put her down on the living room rug in front of Sesame Street, and she'd be good for a couple of hours. Well, I never did that, but I imagined it, several times.

The Wild One, natch, lived up to her nickname. In addition to constant attention, she demanded to be fed when she demanded to be fed. Let me share a little soap-opera drama with you.

Picture this: SAHM, with 2-year-old and 5-year-old underfoot, gets an offer she can't refuse. An old friend has enough Frequent Flyer miles to take two people~that would include moi~to the Cayman Islands for a loooooooooonnnnngg weekend.

The only catch? Moker would be flying solo during our Girls' Weekend Away.

Imagine my surprise when I got a call at the hotel.

"What's wrong with The Wild One?"

"Gosh, I don't know. I'm in a hotel thousands of miles away. Is she still breathing?"

"Of course she's still breathing. But she's also hopping up and down in the kitchen and banging her head against the wall."

"What time is it there?"

"About 5:30."

"She's hungry, silly guy."

"Hungry?"

"Yeah. They eat early, remember? Did you forget dinner?"

"You mean if I feed her this will stop?"

"Yup."

"Thank God."

Well, she was only two. And she hadn't quite learned to use all her words yet. Playing along with Candid Carrie, and her Friday Foto Finish Fiesta. Have a wonderful weekend!

Weekly Winners: On the Road Again

I've written in this space before about the ups & the downs of teaching a child how to drive. Well, here is the genesis of that story: I couldn't even go near my kid and her bicycle, for fear of World War 3 errupting.

She was 6; I was a little older. I know, I was the adult, but still a young adult. My position was that Mommy Knew Best-about everything, including getting the training wheels off and going for a solo spin.

College Girl was having none of that hoo-haw. She was gonna ride when she felt like riding. And her Mommy wasn't going to be part of that equation.

One weekend, CG asked her Dad to take the training wheels off. Then she asked for a push. KER-PLOP! She fell on the driveway, and skinned her knee.

I made a mental note to teach her how to ride alongside the lawn, and fall on the grass.

After that First Fall, the bike stayed garaged for a week. She hit me up after school one day. Wanted to try out that two-wheeler again.

KER-PLOP! She rode alongside the lawn, and aimed her fall perfectly-but tumbled off the wrong side, and skinned her other knee.

The bike went back in the garage again. For the next several weeks, I'd steal a peek at it when I went to wheel the trash down to the curb on Garbage Eve. I mentioned once or twice that I thought the bike was getting lonely.

College Girl was having none of that. She went back to her American Girl Doll books and even volunteered to practice the piano.

I figured if the child had turned to the piano as a refuge, then bike-riding was a lost cause.

Until Aunt Julie showed up.

College Girl and Julie Eliz put the bike in the car and headed for the nearest large parking lot. Within 30 minutes, the kiddo was burning rubber like she was Danica Patrick.

Danica Patrick on a pink Huffy bike with a pink-and-white basket centered on the handlebars. Oh, and pink leggings, too. The quintessential Haute Couture of the 6-and-under set.

This tale is sponsored by Angie and her Wordful Wednesday.

Six-Word Saturday=Fashion Faux Pas

One of College Girl's friends snapped this. Something to do with a sorority function, but I haven't quite gotten the whole scoop. So here's what I have to say about the whole thing, in six words:

Pretty in Pink? Perhaps, I think!

Don't want to go too much farther with this rhyme, 'cause I could be accused of being jealous, or something. After all, don't think I could pull this off. Could you?

Google-Blogger seem to be settling down, so I'll be blog-hopping today, for sure. Six-word Saturday is organized every week by Cate. She runs Show My Face. Please show her some Comment Love today, OK? That is, if Blogger will let you.

We're In Hawaii Now! I Have to Go Potty...

One of the wonderful things about the Internet is that it brings us all closer together. The cyberworld keeps us up-to-date, sometimes inspires us, and it most certainly keeps us entertained.

College Girl passed this YouTube video along to me. A little girl narrates a story about the kittens she sees in a book about kittens.

The child certainly has a different take on the little fur balls. And on life. Please enjoy, "Kittens, Inspired By Kittens."

The Dog Made Me Do It!

The Random Complexity Writing Challenge; March; 581 Words!

John Grogan made me cry. My daughter said I wouldn’t. My SIL said I shouldn’t. But I cried anyway, the day that Marley died.

Marley, as most of you well know, is the name of an incorrigible Yellow Lab owned for 13 years by Grogan and his wife, Jenny. Over Christmas Break, while I was casting about for a gift for College Girl, I thought of Marley.

I’d heard the movie was atrocious, but the book way better. I went with the book.

College Girl accepted this stocking-stuffer from “Santa” with a knowing smile. She loves reading about animals, but her Mom has a track record.

I am, after all, the one who urged the child to read Old Yeller when she was in 4th grade. Poor kid cried and cried. Buckets. Blamed me for exacerbating her concerns about the health and safety of every family pet from there on out.

Oopsies! I had remembered loving the book when I was about 10. I’d forgotten that the dog dies in the end. But from what I’d heard, Marley and Me was a much lighter read than that.

So CG took Marley back to school. And, in between classes in Spanish Lit, history and a seminar on the Holocaust, she finished Grogan’s tribute to “The world’s worst dog.”

She said Marley and Me was a “good read.” Said she’d teared up a couple of times, “but nothing like Ol’dYeller. You know how that book ends, right Mom?”

Fast-forward close to four months. When I went to College last week to visit my peeps, I brought along a book. During the course of my visit, I finished my latest literary companion. So I turned to my kid.

“What about Marley?” CG queried.

“I don’t want to cry on the plane,” I retorted.

“Oh, Mom. It’s not that kind of book. You won’t cry. You’ll laugh, mostly.”

As I was preparing to leave toward the end of last week, I put my pocketbook and my reading material on the counter in Aunt Julie’s kitchen.

“You’re not reading Marley, are you?” The dismissive tone in Auntie J.’s voice was unmistakable.

“Well, sure,” I replied. “CG says it’s an easy read, and that I’ll laugh, mostly.”

Julie, who is the Mom to four boys and two dogs in real life, simply shrugged.

“I don’t know. It didn’t do much for me,” said the woman whose taste in literature I most admire. But Julie, much like CG, assured me that I wouldn’t cry.

“It’s not that kind of book,” she said. “It’s an easy read. You’ll laugh, mostly.”

Well, to tell you the truth, I did laugh a lot, much to the chagrin of the woman sitting next to me on the flight home. Hmmmmmmm…probably should add guffawing to the list of no-no’s in Veggie Mom’s Guide to Traveler’s Etiquette!

Didn’t quite finish Marley during the trip. It really is an easy read, though, and I digested most of it en-route. I had a couple of short chapters to go the next day when I decided to spring for a pedicure.

And that, Dear Readers, is the sad, sad ending to our tale. Marley does indeed die in the end. And Veggie Mom did indeed cry. So much so that the nail technician worried that her ministrations had hurt me in some fashion.

“No,” I said, reassuring her that my piggies felt just fine. “It’s this dumb dog. He just died.” So much for happy endings.

Wordful Wednesday: Playing Dress-Up

All I need to tell you is that even College Kids play Dress-Up. Especially in the dorm, when one wants to find something else to do besides study!

Here we have two lovely examples of Study Fever at its pitch. Danny is from Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Many around those parts call residents "Youpers," for short.

College Girl, let's just say, is from more moderate climes.

In this priceless snap, snagged during Freshman Year at Larry U., the gals decided to dress up as each other's "climate."

CG, you see, is pretending to be a "Youper." Danny, oh,butofcourse, is going for the Beach Baby look. Enjoy Angie's Wordful Wednesday ~ I know I will!

Empty Nest? Not!

Have you any idea how many children it takes to turn off one light in the kitchen? Three. It takes one to say, "What light?"
and two more to say, "I didn't turn it on."
~Erma Bombeck~

Veggie Mom, reporting on location with College Girl and The Wild One. No Empty Nest Syndrome here the past couple of days. I'm taking a few days off to Commune with My College Kidz, and they've shown me a thing or two.

Most of my recent college education involves the cost of groceries ("More Ramen Noodles, please!") and the location of the nearest mall.

I love 'em, I really do! I guess I just wish I didn't feel like a Human ATM Machine all the time!

Negotiating the Highway of Life

After posting the Lombard Street pic last Wednesday, I started to think about how the years have just zoomed by. About a dozen primo memories came crowding to mind.

Like the time I went to the DMV with College Girl~then 15~so she could take the test to acquire her permit. She passed with flying colors, and I tossed her the keys to my Blazer.

"What do you want me to do with these?" she queried.

"Drive us home."

"In the car?"

"That's what I was thinking, sweetie."

I should note that rush hour had just started, and the kid~seriously~looked like she was about to pee her pants at the prospect of negotiating traffic that time of day. But we made it home~safely, I might add. That was the one and only time I felt like I was driving with my Mom instead of my Kid behind the wheel.

It wasn't long, though, before she was zooming hither and yon in my old bucket of bolts, and Moker and I were staying up late, hoping she'd make it home in one piece.

Then there are the tales of trying to teach my girls how to drive a stick. Why is it that getting started is so difficult with a manual transmission, but they really know how to get that engine racing in the upper gears?

As we've negotiated the Highway of Life, we've run into a couple of speed bumps along the way; most of it, though, has been a pretty smooth ride.

Why You Should Eat Your Veggies!

In honor of "friendship Month," Mary Beth over at Blogmania is featuring bloggers that have developed enduring friendships through blogging. And guess who she featured first? I hate to brag, but listen to what MB said about me:

"You can feel her energy in her writing, which is quite an accomplishment. I can only imagine how spunky she is in person. From what I have seen, she is devoted to her friends and family, to promoting Pop'rs and to living life to its fullest."

Why thankyouverymuch, Mary Beth! Here's the full interview with Veggie Mom, if you're interested. And the photo above? Taken last summer, when we could get all 10 of us together at the beach!

Tell us a little about yourself, your family, etc......
Well, there are 10 members of the “extended”
Pop’rs Family. First off, there’s Uncle Lynn, my BIL, the creator of the incredibly good-for-you, wonderfully fun Pop’rs…the whole reason I’m online, urging everyone to Eat Your Veggies! Uncle Lynn is married to Aunt Julie, whose bailiwick is yummy food, homemade quilts, family photos, gardening and, of course, the dogs, Moses and Rowdy. Aunt Julie is also my hubby Moker’s Little Sis. Uncle Lynn and Aunt Julie have four boys: Big Bear, Shark Boy, College Boy and Soccer Boy. On my side of the family, there’s me, Veggie Mom, who’s married to Moker, Aunt Julie’s Big Brother. We have two girls: College Girl and The Wild One.

Besides blogging, what are some of your hobbies?
Let’s see…I love to read, garden, go for long walks…I’m a fairly decent cook, and a pretty good writer, so I’d include those in my interests, too. But as far as being crafty? That’s Aunt Julie’s side of the family! Except for coaxing day lilies out of the soil every spring, I’m just not that handy!

How did you get started blogging?
Well, Uncle Lynn wanted to get the word out this new seasoning he developed at his plant in Northeastern Wisconsin. He thought it would be fun to blog about
Pop’rs, and asked me what I thought about the idea. Several of my friends have started blogs, so I naturally was pretty enthusiastic. On June 16th of last year I finally got my feet wet! It took me a while to find Veggie Mom’s “voice,” but the rest, as they say, is history!

What do you like best about blogging?
I consider
Eat Your Veggies! to be a forum not just for Pop’rs and the Pop’rs Family, but for my visitors as well. I love sharing my everyday thoughts and dreams. Plus, as a blogger I have a built-in “sounding board” in the blogging community. I love the freedom that the Internet brings. I can be sitting here in my dusty basement, and communicate with others halfway around the world! I also enjoy meeting new friends and making common connections. And I get a lot of encouragement and advice, which is nice!

You have such a strong network of online friends. Which bloggers have you created an especially strong bond with?
I’m close with several blogging buddies. Susie, from
Susie’s Homemade is one of my faves…she and her wonderful husband, Jeff, just redesigned my blog, which is awesome! I also have a strong affinity for Karla at Zander and Me, and The Lovely Mannequin, at Fractured Toy. Mannequin’s friends, Frankie and Cupid, are the best…plus they’re featured in my new redesign as well. Check out the Polaroid in the upper left-hand corner that’s labeled “Pop’rs Pals”!

Do you share any common threads with your fellow blogging friends?
We all love sharing stories about friends, family, work and food. Especially food! And every time Uncle Lynn hosts a Great New
Pop’rs Giveaway, I seem to make even more bloggy buds. Wonder why that is?

Any fun vacation plans in 2009?
The
Pop’rs Family vacations every summer at North Carolina’s Outer Banks. We’ve been going there for years, and consider this lovely strip of sand more of a sanctuary than a vacation spot. Last year we were able to get all 10 of us there at once, which was a very special treat! Other than our annual beach getaway, though, I’ve been saving my sheckels…with two kids in college, I can’t afford a fancy vay-cay right now!

Bleacher Booty?

Veggie Mom and Eat Your Veggies! are on the road this weekend in Iowa for the Midwest Conference Swimming Championships at Grinnell College.

Larry U. is making a great showing this year, but the parentals of team members are suffering from paralysis of the derrière...also known as Bleacher Booty. Yes, College Girl and The Wild One are working hard, but Mom wonders if there are any benefits to precariously perching up to seven hours a day on crowded carpeted blocks, hovering over a chlorinated sauna.

Ah, the woes of a Swimming Mom. But we're having oodles of fun, too. Plus, it's great to see My Girls!

The team eats pasta twice a day to keep fueled for the competition. So do the parents, but they're not doing much but sitting around. Hmmmmm...probably need to get back in the pool myself when I get home!

That Was Then...

First February entry in the Random Complexity Writing Challenge
232 words

Ode to a Burrito Baby

This time back then...

Dad was shoveling between blizzards.

They kept marching to our doorstep

one right after the other.

This time back then...

You were screaming, all wrapped

up in your binky like a burrito.

But

the nurses knew just what to do.

This time back then...

The doctor cut off

my meds...well, the strong ones, anyway.

And I had to make do

with codeine-laced Tylenol.

This time back then...

we brought you home from the hospital

and Daddy said, "Which way is up?"

and "Where's the 'off' button' on this thing?"

But you ignored him

and kept exercising those vocal chords.

Til your face turned scarlet, I might add.

This time back then...

you didn't know how to tell time,

and so you slept like a baby

(duh!)

during daylight hours,

and shrieked like a banshee

All

Night

Long.

This time back then...

Daddy would bundle you up

in your car seat,

and you'd go for a ride.
With Mr. Clown, dangling by one
thin piece of orange yarn hair.

Sweet slumbers.

This time back then...

I memorized the first three

Dr. Seuss books,

because you had so many

ear infections

you decided to stay up
with the Late, Late Show.

Madeline kept you company, too.

Two decades passed like

pages blown off a calendar

in a 1940s movie.

Where did all those days go?

Fx4: Invasion of the College Students!

Now, don't get me wrong~I love both of my girls. They're just not cut from the same mold as, say, Martha Stewart.

After spending Christmas Break with my two, I'm beginning to think both their rooms look like pilots for Extreme Home Makeover. Perhaps we could start a new show...Invasion of the College Students?

Playing along, of course, with Candid Carrie and her Friday Foto Finish Fiesta. FYI, College Girl's room is on the left, The Wild One's on the right. TWO's room is bigger, so I guess she rates a higher score on the Mess-o-Meter?

We Wish You a Merry SITSmas & Lots of Linky Love!

Today we're spreading SITSmas Cheer! The Gals over at The Secret is in the Sauce are hosting the First Annual Merry SITSmas over at their place. Heather & Tiffany, SITStas Extraordinaire, are getting all Festive and Fun by hosting a Day of Linky Love. Please visit them for Gifts Galore, and Share the Comment Love!

I saved a FanTAbulous Foto for just such a post. Here's Big Bear, enjoying time with Grandma Vera. The Always-on-the-Ball Aunt Julie sent me this pic with instructions to use it for a Special Occasion, so here ya go!

Update on Snowy Sunday. Or, as we've started calling it, The Sunday Slip 'n' Slide. College Girl and The Wild One landed at the Milwaukee airport, no problem. They picked up their car from a friend, and started the hour-and-a-half trek to Larry U. About 50 miles short of their goal, they had to pull off the highway; it was either slide into a ditch, or try to wait the storm out at a nearby Exxon station. Big Bear, being the awesome Pop'rs Cousin that he is, came to the rescue in his Tahoe. The girls went back to the Scene of the Crime yesterday, and picked up their abandoned Civic after the roads were passable.

As part of Spreading the SITSmas Cheer, I also wanted to Share a Shout-Out. Or, Several Shout-Outs, to be More Specific! More than 68 percent of my Pop'rs Pals are Fellow SITStas, as well. Please visit these folks and Wish Them a Happy!
