Harrummmmmmmph! Looks like Veggie Mom is going to have to start Upping the Ante. I realize that we're a Family-Friendly Blog, what with Aunt Julie, Uncle Lynn and all those delightful Pop'rs Cousins, but this rating might do some serious damage to our Cyber Self-Esteem! Hmmmmmm...it must be all the Giveaways, huh?

When I started blogging way back in June, I didn't have a plan. Didn't have a clue. And all these posts later (209, if you're counting!), it's all come down to this.

On second thought, I think I actually like the concept of being Rated G. Means even more folks can come over here to join the fun, right?

Update on Snowy Sunday. Or, as we've started calling it, The Sunday Slip 'n' Slide. College Girl and The Wild One landed at the Milwaukee airport, no problem. They picked up their car from a friend, and started the hour-and-a-half trek to Larry U. About 50 miles short of their goal, they had to pull off the highway; it was either slide into a ditch, or try to wait the storm out at a nearby Exxon station. Big Bear, being the awesome Pop'rs Cousin that he is, came to the rescue in his Tahoe. The girls went back to the Scene of the Crime yesterday, and picked up their abandoned Civic after the roads were passable.

Up to Our Keisters, and Beyond!

We had such a lovely, uneventful Turkey Day Holiday, celebrating with family and friends. So, we knew that Getaway Sunday, the Busiest Travel Day of the Year, Might. Come. To. This.

No, this shot isn't current. It was snapped by a TJ, whom we presume is a UW-Madison student, judging by his profile. It was posted on his blog, Feeding Milk to Chickens, in February 2008, the last time The Badger State had a snowstorm of monumental proportions.

That day, Wisconsin suffered snows that Shut. The. State. Down. And we're talkin' schools, government offices, the whole proverbial Ball of Wax. OK, we're Mixing Metaphors here, but still...

Southeastern Wisconsin, from Madison to Milwaukee, is forecast to get something along the lines of 10 inches today. According to Moker, and his Profile of Wisconsin for Blog Around the World, we Hardy Cheeseheads enjoy weather akin to "Nine months of winter, and three months of tough sledding."

We're just a Tad Concerned today, though. The East Coast Branch of The Pop'rs Cousins are traveling back to school at Larry U. Today. In the Snow. Hope the precipitation doesn't dump enough to cover poor ol' Mr. Lincoln's Head in front of Bascom Hall. But ya never know!

On a much more positive note, The Green Bay Packers play Carolina today at Lambeau Field. Snow is forecast. Go, Pack!

Does it Bug You?

Mark and Jan, the owners of the Alpacas down in Southwestern Wisconsin, got married last weekend. Aunt Julie, Uncle Lynn and The Pop'rs Cousins were in attendance. Here's Julie Eliz's Report:

"Not even an infestation of Asian Beetles could dampen the mood," Julie says. "I was stressed about the bugs falling into the chocolate fountain, but the Relaxed Bride said, 'People pay a lot of money for chocolate-coated bugs.' So we put an umbrella over the fountain."

A lovely time was had by all. Speaking of which, you'll have a blast your own self if you Play Along With Candid Carrie's Friday Foto Fiesta Finish! I'm certainly glad I did!

*Recipe Week*, Day #5: Grandma Vera's Cutout Sugar Cookies

Aunt Julie's *Recipe Week* is almost over, and what have we learned? A little of this, a smidge of that, and a whole lotta Kitchen-Friendly Concoctions! Two more days to go, but we're getting ahead of ourselves. Let's see what's cookin' today!

We've told you before that we're quite a tight-knit family. The Holidays, especially, bring out the best in all of us, but we're open to a celebration any old time! Treats that both Aunt Julie and I cherish, and bake year-round, are Grandma Vera's Sugar Cookies.

It's simple, really. The entire Pop'rs Clan enjoys life! And what symbolizes more of a sweet occasion than the All-American Sugar Cookie?

Julie, of course, has baked these yummy cookies--with or without frosting, depending on one's mood--all her life, because this recipe was handed down to her by her Mom, my MIL, Grandma Vera. Vera is Grandmother to all The Pop'rs Cousins. And in her hey day, she was known to turn out literally hundreds of Sugar Cookies at a time for all The Gang to enjoy!

We bake these Sweet Treats, of course, at Christmas. We also bake them for birthdays, anniversaries and just to celebrate the advent of summer vacation. Sugar cookies are an all-purpose dessert, and, in our family, can also substitute for breakfast, lunch and dinner! They're easy to make, and this recipe feeds everyone infected with a Sweet Tooth. So, let's get to it!

Grandma Vera's Cutout Sugar Cookies

For the cookies
Cream together:
1.5 cups of sugar
1 cup butter
3 eggs
1 Tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup whipping cream
Sift together, then add gradually:
4 cups flour
1 Tsp. baking soda
1 Tsp. baking powder
1/2 Tsp. salt
1/2 Tsp. nutmeg
Roll the dough out and cut the cookies in fun shapes, according to the occasion. Bake each batch at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool before you frost them!

For the frosting
3 cups powdered sugar
1/2 stick butter
whipping cream-you have to add gradually as you beat the other ingredients, until you get the consistency of frosting.
vanilla, to taste
food coloring-optional
Frost the cookies, and enjoy!

PS: Moker, who also grew up eating these treats, likes to lick the spoon after I finish making the frosting!

*Recipe Week*, Day #4: Oven Stew

Are ya tired of us yet? We've got another cute story and another yummy, Fall-ish recipe for you to try! How many of you think Aunt Julie should start a Recipe Blog? Let's see a show of hands. I thought as much! If we get this thing launched, we'll call it Aunt Julie's Apron Strings. As they say in the Political Arena, the "ayes" have it!

This recipe, for Aunt Julie's Oven Stew, goes way, way back, to when Big Bear was about 8 or 9, and Soccer Boy had not yet entered the picture. Aunt Julie, Uncle Lynn and The Pop'rs Cousins came out our way for a Christmas visit. The Wild One was a Wee One, and College Girl about 4.

We were enjoying unseasonable weather for December, with temps in the high-70s. I know, quite a respite from the chilly winters of Northeastern Wisconsin that Julie and Lynn are used to! We even took the kids to the zoo a couple of days before Christmas. But, as all things will, this good thing came quickly to an end, as the thermometer plunged about 60 degrees overnight!

What to do, with five little kiddos (remember, Soccer Boy was not yet around to put Pop'rs in his milk!) underfoot, and the wind howling through a badly insulated old house? We did the only thing we knew to do: started cooking! We whipped up a wonderful Beef Stew, which was so warm, hearty and delicious that the kids asked us to make it again the day after Christmas. With all those yummy holiday leftovers lying around, too!

Without further ado, I bring you,

Aunt Julie's Oven Stew

1 15-oz. can tomatoes, undrained

3 Tbs. quick-cooking Tapioca, uncooked

2 Tbs. dried basil

1 Tbs. granulated sugar

1 Tbs. salt, or to taste

Ground black pepper, to taste

1.5 lbs. lean stew beef, cut into cubes

1 medium onion, peeled and chopped

2 to 3 carrots, peeled and cut into 1-inch lengths

1-3 Idaho potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes

1 to 2 ribs of celery, cut into 1-inch lengths

In a large Dutch Oven, combine tomatoes with their liquid, tapioca, basil, sugar, salt and pepper. Add cubed beef, onion, carrots, potatoes and celery. Mix well. Cover and bake in a 350-degree oven for 2 to 2.5 hours, or until veggies are tender and meat is well-done. Stir occasionally.

Aunt Julie guarantees that if this doesn't satisfy your Hungry Crowd, nothing will!

A Packer Party, and Some Positive Vibes

Aunt Julie, Uncle Lynn, and All The Pop'rs Cousins started a wonderful Fall Tradition a few years back, holding Packer Parties in their Family Room. They even get all festive and decorate for the occasion, as Aunt Julie's photo, above, illustrates.

The Gang, of course, worships at the proverbial alter of The Green Bay Packers during football seasons.

"We have friends, Joe and Patty, who are our parents' ages, who have had season tickets for ages," Aunt Julie explains. "They have four seats together, and another set of two."

Julie says the Family Room Tradition actually started at a home game at Lambeau Field. "We were once invited to a game, years ago, and had a ball. We drove to Lambeau in Vanna White, of course. We cooked out behind the stadium, listened to the pregame on the radio, and really got immersed in the atmosphere."

Of course, nothing could ruin this Festive Occasion, except for a food shortage. "I was supposed to bring the brats and the small Weber grill," Auntie J. remembers. "When the fire was just right, we looked through the cooler for the brats…I had forgotten them on the kitchen counter! Joe and Patty's daughter, Chris, and I RAN to a grocery store a few blocks away. We were running against the crowd, like salmon swimming upstream, and had to listen to fans tell us to turn around, the stadium was 'that way'."

"Long story short," Julie says, "we bought Klements precooked brats, RAN back to our tailgate spot, threw them on the grill, chugged a bottle of beer each, grabbed a brat on the way to the stadium, and made it there for kick off! "

Julie and Lynn, of course, wanted to do something to repay Joe and Patty for the great time. "We had them over to watch an away game on our big screen TV.," Julie says. "Packer Parties turned into a regular tradition. Weather permitting, we grill. In playoff years, we grill at halftime, and after the victory, throw discarded Christmas trees in the fire pit out on our patio."

Aunt Julie wants to remind all you Brett Favre Fans that The Jets are playing New England today. Might even have a chance, considering Tom Brady's season-ending injury, and all. Yes, Aaron Rodgers played well last week against The Vikings, and Brett even praised him for his play. But some of us are still gonna follow The Jets this season.

Even Aunt Julie remains on the Brett Favre Bandwagon. "Hey, didn’t Brett have a great game against Miami?" We can see it now...a photo of Brett as a Jet as part of the shrine on her mantle!

Once More to the Lake

With temps going down into the 40s at night, and Autumn making its presence felt pretty strongly, Aunt Julie, The Pop'r Queen, along with Big Bear and Soccer Boy, two of The Pop'rs Cousins, took one last spin around Lake Winnebago last weekend.

"The thermometer's dipping and the trees are starting to change,," Auntie J. lamented. "The lake cools off pretty quickly this time of year. I think this was our last trip out this season." The Crew is seriously considering getting the boat winterized until next year. But with the fickle temps in Northeastern Wisconsin--It's supposed to be in the mid-70s today, for instance--they could consider keeping their vessel afloat at least long enough for my gals to try it out, right?

And, speaking of College Girl and The Wild One, they made it to Aunt Julie's house last night. Sounded like their fannies were draggin' from the drive, but we're happy that they landed safely.

Quote of the Day: Moker, who, as the Alpha Male at Our House tends sometimes to sound a tad macho, had something so sweet to say about the gals' departure. "It was so hard to let them go this morning," he sighed. He'll be out at Larry U., though, for Parents' Weekend in October. Countin' Down the Days 'til then!

Thanks to Debbie over at Blog Around the World for the great chance to showcase my Guest-Blogger and Hubby, Moker, and all the Wonders of The Badger State. I've responded to everyone's comments, except for the couple of you whose blogs weren't accessible. I've had So. Much. Fun visiting everyone and blog-chatting the last couple of days!

As Aunt Julie, The Pop'r Queen, correctly pointed out, Moker left out a couple of key points yesterday. To recap:

• Moker, along with Aunt Julie and the rest of their family, hails from Chippewa Falls, WI. CF is the home to Leinenkugel's Beer--Grab a Leinie's today! This Northwest Wisconsin burg claims to have the "purest & softest water in the world, from the Big Eddy Springs" just outside of town.
• Chippewa Falls is also famous On the Big Screen. CF was the movie hometown of Diane Keaton in that 1970s classic, "Annie Hall." And who could forget that Leonardo DiCaprio's character hailed from Chippewa Falls in "Titanic"?
• Aunt Julie and Uncle Lynn now live in Neenah, WI, home of the Rockets, and Lynn's hometown. It's also where Kimberly-Clark was born, on the shores of Lake Winnebago in Northeastern Wisconsin. Many of the "Paper Baron" mansions still line the lake, including the manse of the woman who once controlled the corporation, and who referred to herself as "The Kotex Queen." Seriously!

• Yup, All The Pop'rs Cousins are Green Bay Packers Fans! There's still a little bit of debate about the consequences of Brett Becoming a Jet, but All Six of the PC will be wearing the Green and Gold this season!
• Moker also forgot to mention that College Girl will be a senior at Lawrence University in lovely Appleton, WI, this year. Her little sis', The Wild One, will be a freshman. We Love Larry U.! Goooooooooooo, Vikings!

Welcome to Wisconsin!

Hi, there! I’m Veggie Mom, the proprietress over here at Eat Your Veggies! Nice to meetcha! I started blogging back in June, at the behest of my BIL, Uncle Lynn. Lynn, also known as The Pop’r King, is a Wisconsin Legend in his Own Time. He makes Pop’rs, but that’s another story. Let’s just say he’s on a Quest, and it all revolves around his fun new product. If you have time after the tour, please drop by Uncle Lynn’s Great New Pop’rs Giveaway. You’ll be glad you did!

For those of you new to the Pop’r Family’s Story, let me introduce you. There’s Aunt Julie and Uncle Lynn, the Pop’r Queen and King, respectively, and their four boys: Big Bear, Shark Boy, College Boy and Soccer Boy. I’m Veggie, and I’m married to Aunt Julie’s bro, Uncle Mark. We call him Moker, and he’s our Guest Blogger today. That’s him in the photo above, tailgating at the famed Lambeau Field in Green Bay. We have two daughters: College Girl and The Wild One. The six kids together constitute the entirety of that Famous Northeast Wisconsin Gang, The Pop’rs Cousins.

Before we embark on our tour, we’d like to thank Debbie and all her friends at Blog Around the World, for this chance to showcase the Great State of Wisconsin! So sit back, relax, grab some snacks (the cheese curds are fresh!) and pay close attention, as Moker takes us on a tour of our Upper Midwest Home.

Moker, here, with all the news that's fit to print, and then some! Wisconsin has many mottos. Some of them, like "Forward,” “America’s Dairyland,” and the “Badger State,” are official, steeped in tradition and history. But most residents understand that the best descriptive slogan is “Eat Cheese or Die!”

Wisconsin, where one congressional district has more cows than people, is a national leader in the production of milk, butter and cheese, especially cheddar. Fans of the Green Bay Packers (12 NFL championships) are known as “Cheeseheads” and wear yellow foam rubber wedges on their heads. BTW, one of those foam cheeeseheads once helped prevent serious injury to a victim of a small plane crash!

Wisconsin also is famous for its beer and bratwurst, delicacies that celebrate the German and Polish immigrants who settled in Milwaukee. The Scandinavians–Norwegians, Swedes, Danes and Finns–who immigrated to the rest of the state brought along lefse, lutefisk and sandbakkels.

Living so close to two of the Great Lakes (Superior and Michigan), Wisconsin residents are hardy souls who enjoy delightful summers and falls and endure sometimes brutal winters. Only in Wisconsin can you have a White Christmas as well as a White Halloween and a White Easter all in the same year. No wonder the state leads the nation in per capita brandy consumption!

Wisconsin gets its name from an Indian word of various origins–the Algonquian word for "long river" or the Chippewa/Ojibwa Tribe word that means "grassy place" or "gathering of the waters." The towns of Oshkosh, Menomonie, Menomonee Falls, Oconomowoc, Aswaubenon, Kaukauna, Mukwonago, and Chippewa Falls, among others, are of American Indian origin.

Politically, Wisconsin is viewed as a progressive state that produced Gov. Robert M. “Fighting Bob” La Follette, maverick Sen. William Proxmire and Sen. Gaylord Nelson, the Father of Earth Day. Wisconsin also is the birthplace of the Republican Party (Ripon) and gave the country that infamous, disgraced “Commie Hunter” of the 1950s, Sen. Joe McCarthy.

Wisconsinites love their sports, especially the outdoor variety, including hunting, fishing (muskies), snowmobiling and skiing, and residents enjoy thousands of lakes, although they do grumble about the number of Illinois residents who head north and bag black and white Holsteins instead of deer every year!

Notable Wisconsin personalities include architect Frank Lloyd Wright, super computer inventor Seymour Cray Jr., pianist Liberace, actors Orson Wells and Spencer Tracy, astrologer Jean Dixon, and magician Harry Houdini, whose most famous trick may have been escaping from Appleton!

Tasty Taffy and a Great Giveaway!

While The Pop'rs Cousins were at the beach, they clamored for a batch of Aunt Julie's Taffy Bars. "These are my kids' favorites, and extra easy," she explains. As you may recall, Auntie J. really knows her way around a kitchen!

So, without further ado, here's a Tasty Taffy recipe. It goes well with our Great New Pop'rs Giveaway, don't you think? Please enter today--don't delay!

Aunt Julie's Taffy Bars
1 cup butter, soft
1 cup brown sugar. Cream the sugar with the butter, then add:
1 egg yolk
1 tsp. vanilla
¼ tsp. salt
2 cups flour
Press into sprayed 9 X 13 pan. Bake 20 minutes @ 350
Melt 1 bag semi-sweet chips on top. Cool. Serve and Enjoy!

Ode to Vanna White

The Pop'rs Cousins, along with Aunt Julie and Uncle Lynn, left the beach this weekend, headed for home. After an overnight stop at our house, they were on their way back to Northeastern Wisconsin. Their 14+ hour trip was made more comfortable, of course, thanks to Vanna White.

We're not talking about the "Wheel of Fortune" star here. We're talking about a big ol' white Econoline Conversion Van, with close to 260,000 miles on it. The Pop'rs Family bought Vanna in 1994, when the boys were little and Soccer Boy wasn't yet digging the sod out of his cleats. Vanna has traveled to DC, OBX, and Florida too many times to count. She's also always up for ski trips at the blink of an eye! The shot above shows Vanna in her younger years, with Shark Boy, Aunt Julie, Moses, Uncle Lynn and College Boy ready to embark on another Vanna Voyage.

Vanna is outfitted for the Traveling Life, you betcha. She has four sets of headphone jacks in the back for iPods and personal DVD players. "We laughed at first when we’d ask the boys a question and they would yell because they were wearing headphones," Aunt Julie says. "College Girl has a habit of getting carsick in Vanna, with the movies playing and all the junk we eat on trips, so she is banned. The dogs see us loading Vanna up for a trip and will jump in if we leave the door open. They know we are going away!" Both Trouble Elizabeth and Moses have made multiple trips to the beach in Florida in Vanna. "Trouble Elizabeth had to go on his first beach vacation when he had a broken leg, and needed physical therapy," Julie recalls.

Then there was the time when Auntie J. was seven months pregnant with Soccer Boy. "We got to Milwaukee and I made Lynn stop," Julie explains, wincing at the memory. "I felt closed in, uncomfortable and trapped (much like College Girl feels when she gets Vanna Sick), so he pulled over at a rest stop. He called my OB, who laughed when told I had only been on the road an hour-and-a-half! So I took some Dramamine and slept the rest of the trip. When we got to the hotel for the night, I was amazed at how good the boys had been. Lynn retorted that I could have slept through an atomic bomb!"

Vanna showed her advancing age during this last beach trip. Just outside Milwaukee, she blew a tire. Near Louisville, she overheated. And when Vanna and the Gang reached my neck of the woods, she had to go to the mechanic for a radiator problem.

Everyone made it back to Wisconsin safe and sound, though. But Uncle Lynn is thinking about retiring Vanna. He's got his eye on a successor--another white Econoline Conversion Van. Vanna White the Second, I suppose?

A Crunchy Sort of Salad

The night before we left the beach, Aunt Julie, she of Blueberry and Strawberry Rhubarb Pie fame (not to mention Summer Block Party Chicken Salad, Strawberry Salad with Caramelized Nuts, Sherbet Watermelon, and Fruit Pizza) whipped up this delicious Broccoli Slaw Salad for The Pop'rs Cousins, Aunts and Uncles. The crunchy, slightly spicy addition of the Ramen Noodles gives this dish a very special kick!

Aunt Julie's Broccoli Slaw Salad

Salad mixture
1 bag broccoli slaw mix
2 bunches green onions
1 cup chopped celery

Dressing
¾ cup oil
½ cup sugar
Seasoning from two Beef Ramen Noodles packages

Mix the dressing together. Pour over the salad mixture. Add two packages of crumbled Beef Ramen Noodles and one cup salted sunflower seeds just before serving. Enjoy!
